Observe Juneteenth 2021 in DSM with Virtual + In-Person Events

Juneteenth 2021

June 10, 2021

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in the United States of America. The first celebration of Juneteenth was in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.

The Iowa Juneteenth Observance has been in existence for 30 years and was founded by Gary Lawson in 1990. After 25 years of service, Gary Lawson gave custodianship of Iowa Juneteenth to the Des Moines Urban Leadership.

On April 11, 2002 the Iowa Juneteenth holiday was made an official holiday. It is our desire at Iowa Juneteenth to promote the "spirit" of Juneteenth throughout the year.
