Leading in Times of Challenge with Fred Buie

As president of Keystone Electrical Manufacturing Company, Fred Buie has faced his share of challenges. Along with his work at Keystone, Fred is also a vice chair on the Partnership’s executive board and board of directors. Previously, he was chair of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry and chair of the board for Employee and Family Resources and others. Now, during COVID-19, Fred shares his advice on overcoming tough times.

Sharing the Long-term Vision

Fred’s experience in the utilities industry has brought about unique challenges in his business, including after he acquired Keystone and began work to grow the company. In the first years, he says they were up 50% in volume. In an effort to move the team to this new level, they had little time to prepare for what was coming, which meant they moved into execution mode very quickly. Fred’s focus became hands-on management on the floor. He says you’ve got to meet team members where they are and walk with them to get them where you want them to go, helping them to understand the long-term vision.
