Celebrating 10 Years of 80/35

8035 Music Festival Anniversary in DSM USA

June 29, 2017

It's summer in Greater Des Moines (DSM) and for many, that means that the 80/35 Music Festival is right around the corner! I have been lucky enough to experience this family-friendly festival as a performer (Let’s crowd surf), a music fan (I wonder what Wilco will play?) and as a sponsor through Yelp Des Moines (Wow, this festival is fun to work with!). The multi-day festival is one of the most unique music festivals in the country! The festival is nearly 100 percent volunteer-run and is organized by the Greater Des Moines Music Coalition, a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to building a stronger and more diverse live music economy in Des Moines.

About 80/35 Music Festival

Celebrating its tenth year, the 80/35 name comes from two prominent interstates: I-80 and I-35, which intersect in Des Moines. The festival includes a stage for national touring bands and several free smaller stages featuring regional and local supporting acts. In addition to music, there are booths for local organizations, interactive art, food and beverage sales and resting places.

World-Class Acts

The festival attracts an estimated attendance of over 30,000 people annually to a beautiful setting in the center of Downtown Des Moines (DSM). More than 45 acts are featured each year. Past headliners have included The Flaming Lips, The Roots, Public Enemy, Modest Mouse, Wilco, Spoon, The Avett Brothers, David Byrne & St. Vincent, Wu-Tang Clan and Weezer, just to name a few!

Des Moines Attributes

Now a decade strong, 80/35 and the Des Moines music scene have played a pivotal role in improving the region’s quality of life. Bands are no longer merely passing through Des Moines via Interstates 80 and 35. They are stopping here and playing to audiences of thousands. I'm so honored and happy that Des Moines believes in the power of music.

I have spent years traveling around the country on tour and seeing how other communities support the arts and Des Moines is leading the way! It's one of the reasons I continue to call Des Moines home, and 80/35 and the Des Moines Music Coalition have been a huge part of this story.

As a touring musician, Des Moines is a great place to live. We have affordable housing, we are in the middle of the country with great music venues, recording studios, a nurturing and supportive music community and multiple music festivals. I'm so honored and happy that Des Moines believes in the power of music.

Like in years past, the 10th anniversary edition of 80/35 is sure to be amazing; I hope to see you there. View the lineup and ticket information and watch the 80/35 ten-year documentary below:
