Young Professionals Connection Back to School NonprofitsBackpacks, calculators, supply and clothing sales, yellow buses.  What do these signs mean?  That’s right.  It’s August, which means it is National Back to School month.  According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 55 million students will be heading off to school in the U.S. this fall.  Those students are the future, and, regardless of their background, they each deserve the opportunity to be successful.  You can help make that happen!  Whether you are interested in donating money, items, or your time, consider making an impact on future generations by getting involved with one of the organizations listed below.

Everybody Wins! Iowa

Everybody Wins! Iowa aims to increase students’ self-esteem and success through an emphasis on literacy.  Volunteer reading mentors meet with students to talk and read during breakfast or lunch on a weekly basis.  Power Lunch, Everybody Wins! Iowa’s signature program, reaches twenty schools in the greater Des Moines area.

Needs:
Volunteers (Power Lunch and Power Breakfast reading mentor, office assistance volunteer, web designer, etc.)

Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation

The Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation provides early intervention to at-risk students from low-income communities in order to develop their dream-focused mindset as well as promote students’ college and career readiness.  Beginning in elementary school, students are provided with tutoring, mentoring, and other long-term supports.  With their community effort approach to education, the Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation significantly improves Dreamer students’ likelihood to graduate from high school and then provides Dreamers with tuition assistance as they go on to higher education.

Children and Family Urban Movement (CFUM)

CFUM works to build a strong community that helps children and families lead successful, healthy, and productive lifestyles.  They offer a wide variety of programs including after school academic and recreational activities, leadership and empowerment groups for adolescent boys and girls, and a supper club open to people of all ages.  In 2013, CFUM served a total of 423 children, youth, and neighbors.  

Needs:
Volunteers (Breakfast Club server, reading mentor, life coach, cleaning and organizing volunteer, and more)
Donations (Money, children’s books, children’s clothing, breakfast foods)

Young Professionals Connection (YPC)

The Young Professionals Connection (YPC) promotes an environment that attracts and retains young professionals in Greater Des Moines (DSM). YPC connects young professionals to each other and to the community through social, civic, charitable and professional development endeavors. YPC members have unique opportunities to grow personally and professionally and forge lasting relationships. They engage, connect and form a foundation for their future in DSM. YPC is an initiative of the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
