What’s Happening in DSM This Week? (July 3-9)
July is off to a busy start across the Greater Des Moines (DSM) region, and the week ahead is packed with opportunities to celebrate summer. From Independence Day festivities and classic cars to outdoor adventures and hometown traditions, communities across DSM are making the most of the holiday week. Whether you’re looking to spend time outside, discover a local festival or enjoy one of Iowa’s favorite summer traditions, there’s something happening in every corner of the region. Here are five can’t-miss events happening across DSM July 3-9.
Rock Around the Clock Concert Series
Friday, July 3, 2026 | Heritage Park, Grimes
Kick off the holiday weekend with live music under the summer sky at Heritage Park. This week’s Rock Around the Clock Concert Series features The Lamplighters, making it a great excuse to grab a lawn chair, meet up with friends and enjoy an evening outdoors. Food vendors will be onsite, and admission simply asks for a canned food donation or monetary contribution to support the Grimes Storehouse. It’s a fun way to kick off the Fourth of July weekend while giving back to the local community at the same time.

Goodguys 35th Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals
Friday, July 3 – Sunday, July 5, 2026 | Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines
Whether you’re a lifelong car enthusiast or simply appreciate seeing thousands of classic vehicles in one place, the Goodguys Heartland Nationals delivers an impressive weekend at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. More than 5,000 hot rods, muscle cars, trucks and customs fill the grounds alongside high-speed AutoCross racing, a massive swap meet, live music and family-friendly entertainment. Stick around for the Saturday night fireworks, catch the burnout contest or browse vintage automotive treasures throughout the weekend. It’s one of the Midwest’s biggest automotive events and an easy way to spend a summer day.

The Fourth of July is one of DSM’s biggest events of the summer, and communities throughout the region are celebrating in their own unique ways. Whether you’re looking for a parade, fireworks, live entertainment or a full weekend of festivities, there are plenty of hometown traditions worth experiencing.

Sometimes the best way to spend a summer afternoon is simply slowing down and paying attention to what’s around you. Join a Polk County Conservation naturalist for a guided hike through Thomas Mitchell Park and learn more about the plants, wildlife and history that make this park unique. Have questions about the birds overhead or the trees lining the trail? This is the perfect chance to ask. The leisurely 1.5-mile hike includes plenty of stops along the way, making it approachable for all ages. Just bring sturdy shoes, a water bottle and your curiosity.
