Mid-August brings some of Iowa’s biggest summer traditions alongside plenty of other ways to get out and explore the Greater Des Moines (DSM) region. This week, you can fill your calendar with everything from live music and local shopping to family-friendly entertainment and one of the most anticipated events of the year. Whether you’re planning an evening out, searching for something to do with the kids or looking for an excuse to visit another DSM community, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are five can’t-miss things to do across the DSM region Friday, Aug. 14 – Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026.

It wouldn’t be August in Iowa without a trip to the Iowa State Fair. More than a million people make their way to DSM each year for this massive celebration of everything Iowa, from agriculture and livestock competitions to live entertainment, exhibits, rides and, of course, plenty of food on a stick. Wander through the barns, take a spin on the midway, see what’s new this year or revisit the traditions you never skip. With 11 days packed with things to see, eat and experience, you could visit more than once and still find something completely different each time.

Free Summer Movie Series

Friday, Aug. 14, Wednesday, Aug. 19 & Friday, Aug. 21, 2026 | Perry Grand Theater, Perry
A trip to the movies doesn’t have to put a dent in your family entertainment budget. The Perry Grand Theater’s Free Summer Movie Series continues with Kung Fu Panda 4 on Friday, Aug. 14, followed by The Wild Robot on Wednesday, Aug. 19 and again Friday, Aug. 21. Free screenings begin at 11 a.m. The theater is also offering a Craft & Cinema Sensory Night on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m., plus a sensory-friendly showing of Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie on Saturday, Aug. 22, giving families even more ways to enjoy a trip to the theater.

Adair Farmers & Craft Market

Sunday evenings in Adair are getting a little more lively with the launch of the Adair Farmers & Craft Market. Beginning Sunday, Aug. 16, head to Adair City Park from 4-6 p.m. to shop fresh produce, locally grown flowers and plants, homemade baked goods, handmade art and other finds from area farmers and makers. Each week will also bring live music from Iowa artists, kids activities, food trucks or local food fundraisers, educational programming and opportunities to support community organizations. The market continues every Sunday through Sunday, Oct. 11, giving you plenty of chances to make a visit.

Big Thief with Ben LaMar Gay

Start your week with a night of indie rock as Big Thief brings the Somersault Slide 360 Tour to the Val Air Ballroom. Known for intimate songwriting that can shift from quiet and reflective to powerful full-band moments, the group has built a devoted following around Adrianne Lenker’s distinctive vocals and storytelling. Ben LaMar Gay joins the bill for this all-ages show, giving music fans even more reason to make a Monday night of it. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 p.m. in one of DSM’s most iconic music venues.
