Wellmark Leveraging Technology and AI to Improve Member Experience

When health insurance feels complicated, technology should make it easier. At Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, technology and artificial intelligence help members get clearer answers faster and make it easier to use their coverage. These tools are not about chasing trends. They are practical ways to improve everyday experiences and support our employees to deliver better outcomes.

Technology and AI Improve Member Experience

Wellmark evaluates how to improve the member experience. Through innovation and strategic implementation of new technology, we are modernizing our internal processes to make the health care coverage experience simpler and more efficient.

In the myWellmark app, we are working on an enhanced search feature so members can ask questions the way they talk, without having to know the exact medical term.

For example, members will be able to search “foot pain” instead of “podiatry.” This feature is focused on reducing friction and saving time by helping members find the right information faster, with less effort, because the app works the way they do.

Integrating AI to Streamline Business Agility

By applying that same technology and data approach behind the scenes, Wellmark is also helping teams connect priorities, work more efficiently and move quicker.

Wellmark was recently named a 2026 Foundry CIO 100 award winner for how we use data and AI to better connect business priorities with day-to-day work to improve overall agility. For more than 40 years, the CIO 100 Awards have recognized innovative organizations that exemplify the highest level of strategic and operational excellence in IT.

We are using these tools to help ensure teams focus on the improvements that matter most in support of Wellmark’s mission to make health care better. This recognition reflects how our teams use data to guide complex decisions, work smarter and stay focused on improvements that will create lasting value for our members.

Technology and AI are not about following trends. At Wellmark, they are tools that support our mission to make health care better — simpler, more affordable and more human — for members, providers and communities.
