Two New Skywalks Reimagined Installations Completed in Downtown DSM
GREATER DES MOINES, IA (June 11, 2026) – Two new Skywalks Reimagined installations are now completed in Downtown Des Moines (DSM), further transforming the Downtown Skywalk system into a more vibrant, engaging public space.
The installations at the Wellmark YMCA and Capital Square add to a growing network of activated spaces throughout the Skywalk system, designed to encourage residents, employees and visitors to explore Downtown DSM in new and engaging ways. Property partners at both locations played a significant role in supporting and advancing the installations.

WELLMARK YMCA INSTALLATION
The Wellmark YMCA installation, designed by Project7 Design, introduces a layered, immersive experience through color, light and movement.
The design incorporates acoustic ceiling elements and vinyl window features that create waves of dynamic colors that shift throughout the day with changing light and movement of pedestrians.
“The Skywalk system is part of so many people’s daily experience Downtown, and this installation brings a new sense of vibrancy to the space,” said Julie Trausch, Senior Executive Director at Wellmark YMCA. “We’re proud to be a part of creating a welcoming space for everyone moving through Downtown DSM.”
The installation was made possible through funding from the Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grant Program.
CAPITAL SQUARE INSTALLATION
At Capital Square, artist Jill Wells’ installation, Enlightened, explores form and perspective through a suspended geometric design. Linear colored string elements create a sense of motion and changing viewpoints as individuals move through the space, offering a unique visual experience within the Skywalk.
“This initiative brings new creativity and energy into shared Downtown spaces,” said Amy Palmer, Real Estate Manager at Ryan Companies.
Funding for this installation was provided by Operation Downtown and Bravo Greater Des Moines.
EXPERIENCE THE SKYWALK
Skywalks Reimagined is a collaborative initiative led by Downtown DSM, Inc. and the Greater Des Moines Partnership to transform the Downtown Skywalk system through art. The activations create immersive, connected spaces by bringing together artists, designers, property owners and community partners.
“Skywalks Reimagined highlights what’s possible when partners come together to transform shared spaces,” said Renae Mauk, Vice President of Downtown Development at the Greater Des Moines Partnership. “We’re grateful for the support from Prairie Meadows, Operation Downtown and Bravo Greater Des Moines, whose partnerships are helping create surprise and delight moments throughout Downtown DSM.”
The two new installations bring the total number of Skywalks Reimagined locations to eight across Downtown DSM and support the broader Downtown DSM: Future Forward Vision Plan, a collaborative effort that focuses on creating a more dynamic, connected Downtown that encourages people to stay, explore and engage.
