A Hands-on Design Experience
From a young age, I have always loved being creative. I remember growing up, I loved watching the TV show "Fixer Upper" and thought I wanted to design houses. This passion prompted me to sign up for a housing and interiors class that was offered at Northwest High School in Waukee. From there, I enrolled in architecture classes through the APEX program where I was able to work on a mock multi-family housing development project.
That exposure prepared me for my internship this summer at CMBA Architects, and it has been an incredibly valuable experience for my growth as a designer, student and future professional. Throughout my internship, I am participating in a variety of site visits, learning about multiple disciplines within the profession, gaining experience with new software and developing many new skills. This experience has strengthened my passion for architecture and has given me a better understanding of the industry as I continue my education and prepare for my future career. This fall, I’ll be entering my third year as an architecture student at Iowa State University, and I’m excited to apply what I’m learning at the firm in the classroom.
From Classroom to Career
Throughout my educational journey, I have had a lot of unique experiences. Whether in high school or at Iowa State University, I take advantage of every opportunity I am given. Having hands-on experience, such as working on floor plans or renderings for a client allows me to make mistakes and learn from them.
With CMBA, I have the opportunity to visit job sites, meet with clients and understand the why behind the design. I am also learning different types of architecture programs, exposing me to more opportunities.
What Does Human-Centered Design Mean to You?
Through my internship, I am working alongside the architects at CMBA on different projects for local school districts. For example, I have been able to go on-site to Grinnell Elementary, and I have seen firsthand how the architects at CMBA communicate with their clients. This has been a valuable learning experience as I continue to evolve as an architect.
When it comes to designing a space, I think it’s important to approach every project with clear intentions. I believe that a good design uses a human-centered approach, making sure to first understand the client’s needs. Understanding how people will interact with the space is important and incorporating that into design truly makes each space unique.
Beyond the Blueprint
The most exciting part about this internship is that I’ve been given a seat at the table. I recently had the opportunity to help process renderings that were presented to a client, and it was incredibly rewarding to see my work appreciated in that manner by CMBA. These interactions and opportunities are not something I take for granted as I continue to grow. CMBA has developed a culture that truly values collaboration. It has been incredible to have hands-on experiences that I can take back with me to the classroom.
Advice for the Next Architect
A CMBA internship will help you develop a deeper understanding of what it is like to practice architecture. From the site visits, to working with new software, to having direct access to design professionals with decades of experience, this internship will surely shape you into a skilled architect. If I could advise anyone looking to enter the field of architecture, I would say take advantage of every opportunity, stay open to feedback and do not be afraid to put yourself out there.
