Education In Action Event Focuses On Quiet Caregiving

April 13, 2023

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (April 13, 2023) – The Greater Des Moines Partnership will host an Education in Action event on the topic of Quiet Caregiving on Thursday, April 27. The event will take place from 1 – 2:30 p.m. at the Greater Des Moines Partnership, 700 Locust St., Ste. 100.

A growing number of people in the workforce are caring silently for a loved one, but they may not be talking about it due to the stigma and fear that they won’t be as valued at work. According to recent workforce data, as many as three quarters of employees have some sort of caregiving responsibility. Many of these responsibilities fly under the radar at the workplace.

Confirmed Panelists for the workshop include:

  • Janet Webb, owner of Home Sweet Home
  • MaryAnn Moore, Sales Coordinator, Catch Des Moines
  • Joyce E. McDanel, VP of Human Resources and Education, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines
  • Scott Boots, founder of HCEI.org (Moderator)

This workshop will help attendees understand the issue, and provide insight into the possibilities with their workplace culture, brand and reputation. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Acknowledge those they work with who are caregivers and to ensure that they feel known, included and supported.
  • Show empathy and understanding.
  • Offer a flexible workspace.
  • Offer supportive benefits and more.

“The idea of quiet caregiving is a top trend that workplaces are being asked to confront in their diversity, equity and inclusion efforts,” said Dr. Marvin DeJear, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer at The Partnership. “This event will help employers learn how to better understand how they can support employees in a way they may not have previously considered.”
