DSM USA Continues Fast Population Growth
GREATER DES MOINES, IA (March 22, 2018) — Greater Des Moines (DSM) grew 1.8 percent in 2017, according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau today. The Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) grew by 11,171 residents to a total of 645,911 residents as of July 1, 2017.
DSM’s percentage of growth outpaces Midwest peers including Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Madison. Last year’s population growth is the continuation of a long-term trend for the region’s MSA. Since 2000, the MSA’s population has grown by nearly 42 percent. Since 2010, population has grown by 13 percent. Projections have the MSA nearing 1 million in population in coming years.
“The region’s population growth underscores DSM USA’s momentum and the ability to live life without compromise here,” said Jay Byers, CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. “We must continue to share the region’s story with national and international audiences to continue to attract top talent to the region.”
In February, The Partnership launched a national ad campaign to attract talented workers to DSM. The campaign focuses on research-based themes of promoting that DSM is vibrant, affordable, accessible, welcoming and diverse. DSM residents are encouraged to contribute to the campaign in the following ways:
- Share what they love about DSM in their own words on the #DSMUSA Facebook Group. These posts can be about a favorite event or activity, a fun fact about DSM, the story of why they moved here or any other story about why they love the region.
- Submit a blog post to The Partnership.
- Sign up to be a DSM USA Ambassador. Ambassadors receive emails on the latest news and rankings to share on social media.
