Greater Des Moines Partnership to Host DSM USA Career Exploration Day

April 9, 2021

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (April 9, 2021) — To increase high school students’ exposure to in-demand careers, the Greater Des Moines Partnership is partnering with Tallo, the nation’s premier online platform for connecting students with opportunities, to host a pilot DSM USA Career Exploration Day on Thursday, April 15 from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This virtual one-day event will offer interactive panels, internship spotlights and video tours of partnering companies to introduce Greater Des Moines (DSM) high school students to new career opportunities. Students will also have an opportunity to network with representatives from some of the most in-demand industries in the region including agricultural bioscience, healthcare, construction, finance and insurance, and technology.

“With Tallo’s help, we will have the opportunity to connect Iowa’s brightest students directly with career opportunities at companies across the region,” said Dr. Marvin DeJear Jr., Senior Vice President of Talent Development at The Partnership. “This is especially important following the challenges of the past year and loss of career exploration opportunities for students. Events such as this one help ensure the region’s talent pipeline remains strong, and connecting local youth with local career opportunities helps our region strive toward the Future Ready DSM goal of ensuring 75% of working-age adults have completed some post-secondary education by 2025.”

The partnership between the Greater Des Moines Partnership and Tallo began in February 2020 with the goal of increasing talent recruitment and retention in DSM. As the first economic development region to license the platform, all K-12 school districts in the area have been encouraged to help students sign up and DSM companies and colleges that want to engage with students are provided with additional incentives.

“Our goal is to give students a window into all the career opportunities out there and help guide them toward industries with the greatest potential for growth,” said Casey Welch, CEO of Tallo. “This event will connect students with local employers to give them a taste of the possibilities available to them and hopefully encourage them to explore options they may not have considered.”

A number of the region’s employers will be participating in the event: Corteva Agriscience, EMC Insurance Companies, Facebook, Hubbell Realty Company, Hy-Vee Inc., John Deere, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, Principal Financial Group®, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines and Vermeer Corporation.
