Stephanie Land Announced as Headlining Author at DSM Book Festival

December 15, 2021

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (Dec. 15, 2021) – Stephanie Land, the bestselling author of “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive,” has been announced as a headlining author at the DSM Book Festival. The 2022 DSM Book Festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). The DSM Book Festival connects people who love books with people who create them.

Land’s book recounts her harrowing saga as a single mom navigating the poverty trap. Her unflinching testimony exposes the physical, economic and social brutality that domestic workers face, all while radiating a parent’s hope and resilience. At age 28, Land’s dream of attending college and becoming a writer is deferred when she and her seven month-old have to move into a homeless shelter, fleeing a violent home and lacking any form of reliable safety net. Land’s memoir offers a unique and essential perspective from the frontlines of struggle, but the deeply personal, intimate details of her story paint a larger picture. Land’s presentation is sponsored by United Way’s Women United program.

In addition to acclaimed authors, the DSM Book Festival will feature book club-style discussions led by featured commentators, hands-on activities, children’s programming, food, drink, live music and more. More programing and headlining authors will be announced leading up to the event.

Local authors, illustrators and publishers looking for ways to reach new audiences are encouraged to apply to promote their work and be part of The Festival. The DSM Book Festival is offering an opportunity for selected authors and illustrators to promote themselves and their latest work. Those interested may apply online through Sunday, Jan. 16. Accepted author, publisher and Illustrator applications will be notified by Friday, Jan. 28.

In addition to the headlining author sponsorship, The Festival is also supported by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Humanities, Meredith Corporation, Prairie Meadows, the Des Moines Public Library’s AViD series, BH Companies.
