Joe Murphy Named Partnership's Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy

August 31, 2016

Joe Murphy has been named the Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy at the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Murphy has more than a decade of governmental affairs, political advocacy and public relations experience in both the public and private sector.

Murphy joins The Partnership after having worked at Iowa State University since 2012, most recently as the Assistant Vice President for Government Relations. In that role, Murphy has overseen both state and federal government affairs at Iowa State. He has worked with the Iowa General Assembly to secure appropriation increases for the university over multiple years. He also led efforts that resulted in significant legislative investment for building projects on Iowa State’s campus.

“Joe brings a high level of experience in working with state and federal government leaders,” said Jay Byers, CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. “He will hit the ground running in The Partnership’s efforts to advance our State Legislative Agenda and Federal Policy Agenda.”

Prior to his time at Iowa State, Murphy served as the Director of Public Affairs at Summit Group, an Iowa-based agribusiness company. He previously led state government relations efforts at the University of Northern Iowa, and worked for the Republican Party of Iowa to manage the political campaign of a State Senate candidate in northeast Iowa. Murphy also served as a Legislative Intern on the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance.

Murphy also is active in the community, serving on the Board of Trustees for the West Des Moines Public Library and on the United Way of Central Iowa’s Public Policy Cabinet.

“I am honored to join the Greater Des Moines Partnership team,” said Murphy. “I am passionate about serving the Central Iowa community and I look forward to working with all of our stakeholders and business, community, civic and political leaders to drive economic growth in the region on a global scale.”

Murphy received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Northern Iowa, where he also served as Student Body President. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Drake University. Murphy also is a graduate of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation’s Leadership Iowa program.

Murphy begins his role with The Partnership on Sept. 26.
