Global DSM: Maximizing International Talent Event to be Held in September

August 31, 2017

GREATER DES MOINES, IA  – The Greater Des Moines Partnership is pleased to announce the Global DSM: Maximizing International Talent event on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The purpose of the event is to provide information for attendees on The Partnership’s Global DSM: International Talent Strategy, as well as educate them on legal requirements and processes to make it easier to hire internationally and retain international talent. Presenting at the event will be representatives from Upwardly Global (UpGlo) in Chicago. UpGlo helps eliminate employment barriers for immigrants and refugees. Speakers will share their insights from the nonprofit’s 17 years of work and expertise in helping international talent. Attendees will hear impactful stories of international professionals working in Greater Des Moines (DSM) and discuss issues faced by employers while hiring. This event is aimed at anyone who recruits, hires or manages talent in DSM.

National research also shows that the U.S. is home to 3.7 million foreign-born college-educated immigrants who received degrees abroad: however, 26 percent of them are un- or under-employed (Source: Migration Policy Institute). This is a talent pool that is untapped for many companies. Companies can learn how to better connect to this pool by attending the event.

Between 2009 and 2014, the region’s total population grew by 12 percent, while the foreign-born population grew by 25.1 percent. Approximately 50,000 foreign-born residents live in the region, making up 8 percent of the total population. Every year, approximately 5,000 international students attend the region’s colleges and universities and less than 5 percent enter into the workforce in DSM upon graduation.

The 2017 Global DSM: Maximizing International Talent event will take place from 8 a.m. to Noon in the Conference Room of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, 700 Locust Street, Ste. 100 in Des Moines. The event is free to attend. Learn more and register here.
