"Giants" Book Wins Two National Awards

June 26, 2014

The Greater Des Moines Partnership’s 125th anniversary publication, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” received recognition from two separate national organizations’ award programs this week. The Partnership won an Award of Excellence from the American Chamber of Commerce Executives' (ACCE) 2014 Awards for Communications Excellence. The Des Moines Business Record submitted the “Giants” book to the Alliance of Area Business Publishers (AABP) annual competition, where it earned a Bronze Award for Best Ancillary Publication. Written by columnist Dave Elbert, the 180-page, full color, oversized book was produced in partnership with the Business Record and the Iowa History Center at Simpson College.

“Standing On The Shoulders of Giants” documents the historic foundation of the Partnership, its predecessor organizations, 125 years of Greater Des Moines (DSM) business community’s historical accounts and signature accomplishments, the change agents who helped lift the region to reach new heights, and the vision plan that frames what Des Moines’ future holds. The book includes research and photographs from the Partnership’s archives and was also digitally published, making it available online. The book was unveiled last November during the Wonder of Words Festival.

AABP is an organization of more than 70 publications dedicated to delivering customized regional business news to over 1.2 million business professionals in the United States, Canada and Australia. The AABP judges had this to say about the book: “This publication did a marvelous job of combining Des Moines’ business history with issues facing the contemporary city and state. The beautiful design gives credence to the important ideas throughout the publication. Timelines and graphs are executed with care. The elegantly written profiles are highlighted with current and historical photographs.”

ACCE is the only national association serving the professional development needs of chamber professionals throughout the United States and Canada. Celebrating its 30th year, the ACE program continues to be the vehicle for the chamber community to highlight outstanding initiatives by honoring best practices in chamber communications. The Partnership will be recognized for its ACE Award of Excellence for Class One Publications at ACCE’s Centennial Convention in Cincinnati, August 12-15.
