DMDC 2014 Recap

May 15, 2014

Greater Des Moines (DSM) business and community leaders traveled to the nation’s capital last week to promote the Partnership’s 2014 federal agenda and regional priorities to Congressional and Administrative leaders. Nearly 200 people participated in the 35th annual trip, which was highlighted by a surprise visit from Vice President Joe Biden, a star-studded media panel discussion of Iowa’s “first in the nation” caucuses, and a ceremony commemorating the public service of Senator Tom Harkin and Congressman Tom Latham, who are both retiring this year.

Local leaders heard an often-repeated theme of bi-partisanship and collaboration from Iowa’s Congressional delegation as well as from guest speakers Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). Policy discussions during the three-day trip addressed Agriculture/Trade, Education, Health Care, and Transportation, with workshops that focused on the Farm Bill, Housing, and Immigration.
