Artists on Music Mix Announced

March 3, 2014

The Partnership and the Greater Des Moines Music Coalition are excited to announce the Greater Des Moines (DSM) artists who will be included on the DSM USA Music Mix, a collection of locally produced music compiled into a free, downloadable format available at DSMpartnership.com/musicmix. The DSM USA Music Mix will be promoted this week at SXSW, the annual film, interactive, and music festival/conference in Austin, Texas. The Partnership will join the State of Iowa in hosting the Iowa Reception at SXSW to promote career and quality of life advantages in the state. Additionally, the Partnership will promote the Music Mix at other conference outlets, and at future career fairs and out-of-state workforce recruitment events.

The artists that will appear on the DSM USA Music Mix are:

  • Brother Trucker
  • The Poison Control Center
  • Mary McAdams
  • The Uniphonics
  • Holy White Hounds
  • Chad Elliott
  • Bonne Finken
  • Dustin Smith & the Sunday Silos
  • Gloom Balloon
  • Foxholes
  • Bright Giant
  • The Nadas
  • North of Grand
  • Mr. Baber's Neighbors
  • Mighty Shady

The selection process for the Mix began when nearly 50 DSM musicians submitted a song to a local jury who scored the tracks based on a three criteria: 1) songwriting — the quality of original musical and lyrical compositions, 2) musicianship — execution appropriate to the material, and 3) appropriateness for compilation — lyric content, production quality, and artist activity with the community.

The top 20 songs with the highest score were then in the running to appear on the Mix. The public was invited to vote for their three favorite songs that best represent the DSM music scene. The songs that appear on the Mix received the most votes.

“We are so excited with the results,” said Mary Bontrager, Executive Vice President of Workforce/Education for the Partnership. “There were more than 1,000 people who cast their vote, which just goes to show how passionate Central Iowa residents are about their music. The mix showcases a diverse representation of music and talent, which will be an invaluable example of the exemplary quality of life that our region has to offer.

The free music is available at DSMpartnership.com/musicmix. The Partnership and Greater Des Moines Music Coalition would like to thank all of the participants for their time and submissions to the contest.
