Literature & Libations Series (21+)

The Literature and Libations series puts a new twist on happy hour. Participants will engage with classics in a fun and casual atmosphere. Check out all of our happy hour events from the 2021 Festival below. The 2022 Literature and Libations series events will be announced at a later date.

Online participants will need a computer, laptop or tablet with a fast reliable internet connection. Participants seeking specific feedback from the instructors may also need a camera and microphone. For a full experience, online participants may purchase a sampling kit from a partnering business identified in the session description.

In-person participants are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. Each session has participant capacity limits.

Calling all Elizabeth Bennet fans! It’s time to raise a glass to Jane Austen. Join us as we cover the ins and outs of Jane Austen with Librarian Sarah Lane from the Des Moines Public Library and a selection of sparkling wine presented by our friends at Winefest. This lively discussion will be full of wit, bubbly samples and Austen-inspired conversation.

A Tale of Two Breweries  |  April 3, 2021 at 5 p.m.

In this age of frenzied social media, listicles and 280-character blasts, is it still important to read classic literature? This session will answer that question all while sampling an array of offerings from SingleSpeed Brewing and the new Hot Air Brewing. We’ll pair genres of books and brews like refreshing ales and pilsners with easy-to-read classics like “The Old Man and the Sea.” Or maybe you prefer a dark stout with a moody read from “Moby Dick?” Call me Ishmael.

Join the crew from Foundry Distilling Company for an introduction to the whiskey-making process, an overview of major types of whiskeys and a look at current and upcoming spirits from Des Moines’ very own craft distillery.
