Event Information

Featuring nearly 300 vendors from 50 Iowa counties, the Downtown Farmers’ Market in Historic Court District in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) offers scores of tasty treats each summer on Saturdays. Visitors can enjoy locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, baked goods and Iowa-raised meat, including beef, pork, chicken, goat, rabbit, lamb and tilapia! The adventure doesn’t stop there either. Guests can enjoy local artists, live music and entertainment, ready-to-eat foods, special programming and learning opportunities all in the course of a Saturday morning. Whether it’s seasonal flowers, locally produced wine or a new culinary adventure, there’s always something to experience at the Downtown Farmers’ Market.

This event is free and open to the public.

UnityPoint Health – DSM Programming

For May 19: Know how much you matter to this world. When a disaster strikes, it takes the work of many to have a positive outcome. Join the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines tent as they celebrate National Emergency Services Week by recognizing those who go above and beyond. Members of the Trauma Services team will be on site and providing hands-on education. Since bleeding is the most common preventable cause of death in an injured person, it is important for everyone to know how to Stop the Bleed and Save a Life.

Entertainers

Enjoy live music from local performers while you shop. This week, hear these performers:

  • Ace Jones: Ace Jones is a singer-songwriter from Marion. He plays acoustic, folk, rock, pop and easy listening music. He sings a variety of original songs and covers, self-accompanied by his guitar.
  • Creations With A Twist: Daniel Poe from Creations With A Twist has been in business for nine years and has provided amazing balloon art at a wide variety of events. People of all ages enjoy watching him twist colorful balloons into recognizable characters, incredible wearables and comical sculptures!
  • Heartland Mini-Railroad Express: Kids are invited to come take a ride on the Mini Railroad! Located on 2nd Street, South of Court Ave. the Heartland Mini Railroad provides young visitors a fun and unique experience while shopping The Market.
  • Jolie Seitz: Jolie Seitz is a local singer-songwriter and musician who has been a part of the live music scene in DSM since she was 12 years old. She is a DSM native and junior at Roosevelt High School working towards a career in music production and as a professional musician. Seitz performs both covers and original compositions.
  • Jordan Beem: Jordan Beem is an acoustic performer who has performed in various venues, from large to small bars, restaurants, festivals and more. Beem focuses on playing music that is upbeat and fun, while also very organic. If you want to hear music from Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Mayer and Mumford and Sons, come check Beem out!
  • Mennonite Singers: The Mennonite Singers are a group that performs gospel music in beautiful four-part harmonies.
  • Meredith Drive Reformed Church Kids Ministry: This group consists of church members, including both kids and adults, performing family-friendly music, as well as children ministry church songs. They will bring an acoustic guitar, keyboard, small drums and tambourines to get listeners as energized as they are! Puppet shows, balloons and face painting are some fun activities this group will share with the community.
  • Party of Four: This local group of eight musicians has been entertaining at The Market for several years. They sing a capella in styles including jazz, folk and contemporary.
  • Sweet Tater TeRonde: Sweet Tater sits on a bucket playing guitar and harmonica while stomping on a tambourine, playing gravel road git-down music!  Blues, bluegrass and originals.

Community Corner

Stop by the Community Corner on Third Street, south of Court Avenue, to find out what is happening in Greater Des Moines (DSM). Local charitable organizations — welcomed as Saturday Salutes at The Market — promote learning opportunities, Downtown events and community resources each Saturday. This week, check out the Saturday Salutes:

  • CIEE: CIEE is a nonprofit program that provides the public with information about hosting foreign exchange high school students. The mission of the Council of International Educational Exchange is to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. Stop by and match flags from around the world with their country. Profiles of the exchange students will be available at the booth along with brochures detailing the program.
  • Des Moines Water Works: Des Moines Water Works (DMWW) is a regional utility that protects public health by delivering outstanding quality water in reliable quantities. DMWW staff will give away free water bottles to visitors (while supplies last), including a dog dish for thirsty animals.
  • Friends of Iowa CASA & ICFCRB: Friends of Iowa Court Appionted Special Advocates (CASA) and Iowa Citizen Foster Care Review Boards (ICFCRB), together with community volunteers and others, promote and support volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children and public awareness of the importance of safe and permanent homes for all children. Stop by the booth to build and decorate your own 3-D home or to find out more about Friends of CASA and ICFCRB.
  • Iowa Asian Alliance / CelebrAsian Festival: The mission of IAA is to unite Iowa's diverse Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities for the purpose of fostering economic growth and community development within the state of Iowa. IAA's vision is to create an Iowa in which these groups are an integral part of a vibrant and prosperous community. Learn about CelebrAsian, Des Moines' Asian Heritage Festival.
  • Polk County Master Gardeners: The Master Gardener program is a volunteer service training program whereby adults are given advanced training in horticulture in exchange for volunteer service to the community. They will be promoting upcoming events and distributing seasonal educational information.
