Event Information

Featuring nearly 300 vendors from 50 Iowa counties, the Downtown Farmers’ Market in Historic Court District in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) offers scores of tasty treats each summer on Saturdays. Visitors can enjoy locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, baked goods and Iowa-raised meat, including beef, pork, chicken, goat, rabbit, lamb and tilapia! The adventure doesn’t stop there either. Guests can enjoy local artists, live music and entertainment, ready-to-eat foods, special programming and learning opportunities all in the course of a Saturday morning. Whether it’s seasonal flowers, locally produced wine or a new culinary adventure, there’s always something to experience at the Downtown Farmers’ Market.

This event is free and open to the public.

Entertainers

Enjoy live music from local performers while you shop. This week, hear these performers:

  • Fresh Squeezed Tunes: Abe Goldstein is a solo accordion player specializing in standards, ethnic music and kids' tunes.
  • Heartland Mini-Railroad Express: Kids are invited to come take a ride on the Mini Railroad! Located on 2nd Street, South of Court Ave. the Heartland Mini Railroad provides young visitors a fun and unique experience while shopping The Market.
  • Jonathan May − Mr. Magic Productions: Family and corporate magician Jonathan May specializes in making fun and fast balloon animals for the children of the Downtown Farmers' Market. He is known for his minimum wait time and maximum entertainment value!
  • Josh Cohen: Josh Cohen's solo six-string electric bass performances use extended techniques to create the sound of an entire band with only one instrument and without the aid of loop pedals. Everything he performs, from jazz to blues to pop, is being created by one person in real-time.
  • Make DSM Loud: Music Gone Mad is a street-performing horn band consisting of 15 performers. Performing both old and new rock and roll, Music Gone Mad utilizes trumpets, trombones, tapset, electric guitar and bass.
  • Mississippi Jake: With acoustic guitar and gravel in his voice, Mississippi Jake brings folklore from the hills of the Ozarks to the streets of DSM.
  • Stu Ryan O'Brien: Stu Ryan O'Brien, based in DSM, is known for playing traditional Irish pub music as well as standard Irish folk songs. The band's lead vocalist, Stuart Walker, can be seen playing guitar and singing along with two accompanists who will occasionally play the accordion and percussion.
  • UnityPoint Ensemble: This group consists of two-to-five members playing the flute, violin, cello, guitar and keyboard. They have a wide selection of classical music, fiddle music and contemporary Christian music.

  • Orchard Place: Orchard Place provides mental health expertise and services to Iowa children and families. Their mission is to develop strong futures for youth dealing with mental health issues.
  • Save the Children Action Network: Save the Children Action Network hopes to educate market customers about the need for increased investments in early childhood education in Iowa. They also want to share the ways in which they are engaging our government, businesses, partner organizations and supporters to take bold action and to hold our elected leaders accountable for the youngest global citizens – our children.
