Featuring nearly 300 vendors from 50 Iowa counties, the Downtown Farmers’ Market in Historic Court District in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) offers scores of tasty treats each summer on Saturdays. Visitors can enjoy locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, baked goods and Iowa-raised meat, including beef, pork, chicken, goat, rabbit, lamb and tilapia! The adventure doesn’t stop there either. Guests can enjoy local artists, live music and entertainment, ready-to-eat foods, special programming and learning opportunities all in the course of a Saturday morning. Whether it’s seasonal flowers, locally produced wine or a new culinary adventure, there’s always something to experience at the Downtown Farmers’ Market.

This event is free and open to the public.

Entertainers

Enjoy live music from local performers while you shop. This week, hear these performers:

  • B. John Burns: B. John Burns is a Greater Des Moines (DSM) songwriter who celebrated his 40th year on stage in 2016.  He performs his songs on piano and guitar and covers a wide spectrum of musical styles, including folk, pop, blues, rock and country.
  • Bobby Bruce Schlagel: Bobby Bruce Schlagel, a former college football player, shares his talent as a singer-songwriter who plays country, country rock, pop and rock classics dating from the '50s to present-day cover tunes.
  • Jake Schrodt: Jake Schrodt has been playing guitar since he was around the age of 13 and continues to create music to this day. After releasing an album with his old band, Schrodt became a solo artist and now performs alternative rock, Americana and country music.
  • Kirk Sloan Classical Guitar: Kirk Sloan is an instrumental soloist on classical guitar who has performed at venues around DSM. His classical guitar arrangements include both classical music and popular tunes.
  • Lily DeTaeye: Lily is a singer-songwriter who has previously participated in The Market's Grapevine Tunes program for young performers. She plays acoustic music on the guitar, harmonica and ukulele. Her style of music is folk and indie rock. DeTaeye performs a balance of covers and original tunes.
  • Living Statue: Katelyn McBurney's Living Statue act is derived from classical marble statue form. McBurney has been performing around the region for the last four years, maintaining a held position until interacted with, upon which time she turns into a "living" statue character.
  • Ryan O'Rien: Ryan O'Rien draws inspiration from roots in Irish and English heritage, along with a deep appreciation of the open ocean and common human rights and freedoms. From that inspiration, he translates traditional Celtic tunes, old Atlantic sea songs and original content inspired by modern news headlines into highly rhythmic, catchy folk n’roll.
  • Samantha White: With over a decade of experience, Samantha White is a solo violinist with a large repertoire of bluegrass, Celtic and folk songs.

Community Corner

Stop by the Community Corner on Third Street, south of Court Avenue, to find out what is happening in Greater Des Moines (DSM). Local charitable organizations — welcomed as Saturday Salutes at The Market — promote learning opportunities, Downtown events and community resources each Saturday. This week, check out the Saturday Salutes:

  • CIEE: CIEE is a nonprofit program that provides the public with information about hosting foreign exchange high school students. The mission of the Council of International Educational Exchange is to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. Stop by and match flags from around the world with their country. Profiles of the exchange students will be available at the booth along with brochures detailing the program.
  • Des Moines European Heritage Association: Des Moines European Heritage Association's mission is to connect Iowans with European traditions, language education and cultural experiences. DMEHA provides resources and tools to other cultural heritage organizations. Des Moines European Heritage Association will produce the Christkindlmarket in Des Moines on Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, 2018. Christkindlmarket — Des Moines will educate and entertain our community by exposing them to seasonal European-style foods, products and activities!
  • Iowa Games: Iowa Games is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide sports and recreation opportunities for all Iowans through Olympic-style festivals, events and programs. Stop by to learn more about the Summer Games happening in July!
